OUR IDEA
A benefit for Charity Water

Throw a big party and invite all of our friends. Bring in a really cool band and serve ice cold beer, classy wine, and our stand-by tacos. The entire event will be underwritten by the generous community of EastLake Tri-Cities and other local really cool sponsors so that 100% of all ticket and alcohol sales will go directly towards helping to fund clean water projects in Ethiopia. It may not be too extravagant – it’s probably a t-shirt and jeans event, but it’s just another way that we can live simply so that others can simply live. The party takes place on July 20th at the Uptown Theatre in Richland – 1300 Jadwin Ave.

THE NEED
Hand-Dug Well for a People in Need

663 million people in the world live without clean water.  That’s nearly 1 in 10 people worldwide. Or, twice the population of the United States. The majority live in isolated rural areas and spend hours every day walking to collect water for their family. Not only does walking for water keep kids out of school or take up time that parents could be using to earn money, but the water often carries diseases that can make everyone sick. But access to clean water means education, income and health – especially for women and kids.

CLEAN WATER CHANGES EVERYTHING:
HEALTH

Diseases from dirty water kill more people every year than all forms of violence, including war. 43% of those deaths are children under five years old. Access to clean water and basic sanitation can save around 16,000 lives every week.

EDUCATION

Clean water helps keep kids in school, especially girls. Less time collecting water means more time in class. Clean water and proper toilets at school means teenage girls don’t have to stay home for a week out of every month.

TIME

In Africa alone, women spend 40 billion hours a year walking for water. Access to clean water gives communities more time to grow food, earn an income, and go to school — all of which fight poverty.

WOMEN EMPOWERMENT

Women are responsible for 72% of the water collected in Sub-Saharan Africa. When a community gets water, women and girls get their lives back. They start businesses, improve their homes, and take charge of their own futures.

SO WHY CHARITY WATER?

They work with local experts and community members to find the best sustainable solution in each place where they work, whether it’s a well, a piped system, a BioSand Filter, or a system for harvesting rainwater. And with every water project funded, their partners coordinate sanitation and hygiene training, and establish a local Water Committee to help keep water flowing for years to come.

WHAT’S OUR GOAL?

Through their work, Charity Water has estimated that on average it takes $10,000 to fund an entire water project from start to finish, so that’s what we want to do.  The exact location for the project is yet to be determined, but once you give to our campaign you’ll be added to the mailing list for updates on where and how the money was spent.
